Our design philosophy considers the location, budget and needs of the clients to ensure that we work together to achieve a plan that is sustainable, functional and beautiful. A professional GFE Landscape Design Plan will add value to your property and lifestyle.
A landscape design plan prepared by Gardens from Eden is the most important step for you to take as this is a blueprint for the finished construction and your future enjoyment. Colin Barlow has extensive design experience, plant selection and knowledge and is always mindful of creating landscapes that consider environmental sustainability, water conservation and maintenance issues.
Plants selected by GFE are trialled extensively in WA conditions before being selected so that we can be sure of their performance in your garden. Similarly all hard scaping products recommended in the design will be available locally and be appropriate for the function. Irrigation plans can also be provided for the designed landscape at no additional cost.
GFE promotes sustainable and waterwise landscaping practices and only uses Australian standard soil conditioners and mulches. GFE always recommends using efficient water saving products including wetting agents and polymer crystals, water saving irrigation practices and safe fertilizing and pest and disease control.
GFE are experienced in designing all styles of gardens from native gardens to formal or contemporary and everything in between. It is advisable to design the garden to complement the architecture of the house to create a seamless functional transition from one to the other.
Our design philosophy is also based on the key elements of design: line, form, texture and colour and how these are combined holistically within the design principles of balance, proportion, rhythm, repetition, emphasis, scale, sequence, simplicity, symmetry, variety and restraint to create beautiful and unique outdoor spaces that cater for the lifestyle of the owners.
The design process involves a three step process involving an initial consultation, design concept and final landscape design. Practical, informative and beautiful CAD plans are usually provided in a 1:100 plan view in colour and black and white. 3D elevations of the landscape design are also available on request.

Design/Renovation Process
Our design process follows three simple steps:
- Initial Consultation
- Design Concept
- Final Landscape Design
1. Initial Consultation
The initial consultation is the first step in the design process. The meeting ideally takes place on-site at the home, garden or property to be designed or renovated; this allows Colin to get a feel for the property.
A client interview is then undertaken to ascertain what you would like to accomplish in your garden. If you are not sure at this stage what you want it may be useful to compile a scrapbook of photos, magazine articles, garden styles or features etc that you would like to include in your new garden.
Your budget will also be discussed to ensure the proposed design is within your financial guidelines. If you also have a detailed copy of the site plan of your house and block with elevations this is very helpful and will speed up the design process. If you do not have them, contact your builder or the planning department of your local council. If these are not available site surveys can be undertaken.
Depending on the complexity, size of the area and detail required, a written Fee Schedule will then be compiled outlining the costs of designing your garden or landscape.
A consultation fee for is payable at the completion of the consultation. (Cheque or cash only)
For clients who have had an initial consultation and decide to undertake a landscape or garden design, the fee for that consultation will be deducted from the total design fee.
2. Design Concept
The design concept presentation is the next step in the design process. The meeting again usually takes place on-site so that the client can visualise the concept and ideas and relate them directly to their own personal space.
A deposit is required to commence the design concept as per Fee Schedule.
The concept plan will usually be created at a scale of 1:100 or 1:200 (large commercial) in a colour plan view. The design concept plan is presented to the client for discussion and review.
This plan will indicate the hard scaping structures and materials including the proposed walls, paving, concrete, decking, Gazebo's, pavilions and water features etc. Brochures and/or samples of the recommended products will be presented for further discussion and approval.
The plan will also include the plants to be used, a planting schedule outlining the botanical and common names. These plants and their growth habits, characteristics and requirements will be discussed to ensure that you approve.
Once the design concept plan and any changes have been approved, the final Landscape Design plan can then begin.
At the completion of the design concept presentation a progress payment is required as per Fee Schedule.
3. Final Landscape Design
Ideally this meeting will again be on-site at the home, garden or property to be designed.
The final Landscape Design Plan will usually be created at a scale of 1:100 or 1:200 (large commercial) in a colour plan view.
This plan will indicate all the hard scaping structures and materials including the proposed walls, paving, concrete, decking, Gazebo's, pavilions and water features itemised in a schedule. The plan will provide you with all the necessary information for construction and council submission.
Included will be all the plants to be used, a planting schedule outlining the botanical, common names and quantities required. A general garden care maintenance schedule is also provided.
At the completion of the Final landscape design presentation the final payment is required as per Fee Schedule.
Irrigation plans can also be provided for the designed landscape at no additional cost. Quotations to construct the design can also be provided.
In some cased additional plans may be required for development applications and a building licence including engineer's plans.
